"Theme from Organ Symphony"
Composed by Camille Saint-Saëns (1825-1921)
Theme from Symphony No.3 (Op. 78)
Arranged for Brass Band or Training Band by Russell Gilmour
Saint-Saëns' Symphony No.3 contains a famous and recognisable theme. This short arrangement for a Brass Band or Training Band is an arrangement of just that theme, including the later fanfare interjections over the theme.

You may know this melody because it was featured in the 1995 film "Babe”, based on Dick King-Smith's 1983 novel "The Sheep-Pig". The song they used was called "If I Had Words". By adding lyrics to this already famous tune, Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley got to number 3 in the UK charts.

The arrangement has been transposed down from the original key. It is now in in concert Eb major, putting the Eb instruments into the comfortable key of C major and the Bb instruments in the common key of F major.

By studying this piece, your instrumentalists will learn how to understand the compound time signatures (nine-four and six-four) and their relationship to the simple time signatures which they will already know (three-four and four-four, for example). The notes in this piece are relatively simple. The harmony is satisfying and powerful. The skill of performing this arrangement will be in:

1) finding a legato style that replicates the sound of the organ
2) being able to control the dynamic level so that the fanfare interjections can be heard above the sustained parts.

• Flexible 5-part arrangement - useful for ensembles with variable attendance.
• Includes contrasting dynamics.
• Promotes a sustained legato style.
• Fanfare interjections.
• Promotes independent counting and understanding of compound time.

N.B: This arrangement follows the phrasing and articulation marked in Saint-Saëns' organ part and main score.
