Handel - Messiah - Exeter Cathedral

After Grand Baroque IV last week, I returned to Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 8th December 2019 to perform Handel’s Messiah with Devon Baroque and the Exeter Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Timothy Noon.

The 2:30pm performance was packed with people, eager to hear this Advent favourite. I played first trumpet in Devon Baroque led by Persephone Gibbs (violin) and it was great to see many of the people who had played at my wedding for the first time since then.

The Exeter Cathedral Choir did a great job, with many exceptionally young singers immersing themselves in the performance of the three-hour marathon that is Handel’s Messiah, as well as the rehearsals earlier in the day. Our soloists were: Molly Noon (soprano), Madeleine Shaw (alto), Eamonn Mulhall (tenor) and Tim Mirfin (bass).

I had the pleasure of playing The Trumpet Shall Sound with Tim Mirfin, and it was a particularly enjoyable performance of this aria. I enjoyed playing in a trumpet section with Katie McClaughry (second trumpet) and Harriet Riley (timpani).
