Handel - Eternal Source of Light Divine - St Peter and Holy Cross - Wherwell, Hampshire

I performed at a wedding at St Peter and Holy Cross Church in Wherwell in rural Hampshire on Saturday 3rd September 2022. I played Handel’s Eternal Source of Light Divine, with the organist Anthony Burns-Cox, who played the vocal solo part, as well as the accompaniment, on the organ. I also played descants in the hymns Cwm Rhondda and Jerusalem. Finally, we played Stanley’s Trumpet Voluntary and Purcell’s Prince of Denmark’s March as the happy couple left the church. The organ had some curious foibles: some of the notes sounded even when no key was pressed (when certain registrations were used) and other keys got stuck down occasionally. Nevertheless, the organist did a fantastic job and he quickly learned the quirks of each stop and managed to tame it!

I was standing in for a dear friend and colleague who has unfortunately had a very serious motorcycle accident. The vicar made an announcement at the beginning of the wedding, with general bits of housekeeping information, and she offered a prayer for him and those who are looking after him.

The church was packed with over 200 people, and the congregation sang the hymns with gusto.

edgeI arrived early, and had a lovely walk around this picturesque village. I crossed a long wooden walkway and explored the Chilbolton Cow Common on the other side of the River Test.
