Chronicles - Trumpet & Organ:

The Medieval Manuscript the 'Chronicles of Mann and Sudreys' mentions various locations, including the Isle of Man, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and even places as far away as Norway and Brittany.

Russell Gilmour (trumpet) and David Kilgallon (organ) use melodies from these countries and they merge and fuse these ideas together with their own to create unique compositions for trumpet and organ. The idea behind their musical collaboration is to explore traditional music from these countries and to adapt the music, interpret it and explore it. Chronicles' musical format is slightly unusual in that it combines trumpet and organ - not the instruments you may initially associate with folk music - but it is an approach that has sparked a lot of interest.

Their limited edition EP "Prologue" is a sample of things to come, as the production of a full album is underway. The full album will be Chronicles' musical impression of the Isle of Man's influences and rich history - as documented in the Chronicles of Mann.

Mozart Masterpieces - Brandenburg Sinfonia - Streatham Choral

On Saturday 30th March 2019 I traveled to St. Peter’s Church on Leigham Court Road in Streatham to perform Mozart’s Krönungsmesse (Coronation Mass) [K.317] and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore [K.339] with the Brandenburg Sinfonia and Streatham Choral. The well-attended concert, entitled Mozart Masterpieces, featured Ave Verum Corpus [K. 618], Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, Exultate Jubilate [K.165] and the Coronation Mass.

Streatham Choral did an excellent job under their conductor Calum Fraser and their first piece (Ave Verum Corpus) was impressively sung ‘off-copy’. Catriona Hewitson (soprano) did a fantastic job in the Exultate Jubilate. It was a pleasure to listen to this piece in its entirety, as the Alleluia is so often heard in seclusion from the rest of this solo motet. Instrumentally, the horn section (of Jonathan Williams and Nick Benz) was excellent and the oboe section (of Rachel Broadbent and Penny Smith) played beautifully throughout. I enjoyed playing in a (modern) trumpet section with my good friend and fellow RNCM alumni Nick Wright.

Photographer Anne-Marie Sanderson was present during the rehearsal and concert and choir member Alison Wareham wrote an excellent blog article on the Streatham Choral website called ‘Mastering Mozart?’ which is well worth a read.

It was a very enjoyable day of music - well done all!
