Bach - B Minor Mass - Bristol & Ramsbury - Solomon’s Knot
25 May 2018, 21:00After an incredible fortnight at the Göttingen International Handel Festival I returned to the UK via the Hook of Holland to Harwich ferry to join Solomon’s Knot in their continuing B Minor Mass UK tour; a project that began in December 2016 at Shoreditch Town Hall and has seen subsequent performances in Ulverston (July 2017), Nottingham and at St. John’s Smith Square in London (December 2017).
2018 marks Solomon’s Knot’s 10th anniversary and the project culminated with these two performances at prestigious festivals and venues. The first performance was on Wednesday 23rd May 2018 at St. George’s Bristol and the second was on Friday 25th May 2018 at Ramsbury Holy Cross, in Wiltshire, as part of the Newbury Festival.
Both performances were exceptional and a fantastic way to end the UK tour. Highlights included: Alex Ashworth (bass) and Anneke Scott (horn) playing the Quoniam with fantastic bassoon playing from Inga Maria Klaucke and Hayley Pullen, also a fabulous Laudamus te by Rachel Ambrose Evans with great string accompaniment, led by Jamie Campbell (leader), and a lovely duet in Christe eleison by Zoë Brookshaw and Jessica Gillingwater.
Qui sedes was expertly sung by Martha McLorinan and it featured the lovely sounds of Jasu Moisio (oboe and oboe d’amore) who sounded excellent in the solo obbligatos and in a section with his exceptional oboe colleague, Robert De Bree.
The trumpet section featured myself and my remarkable colleagues Will Russell and Gareth Hoddinott. It was a pleasure to play the whole piece on first trumpet with those two playing with stylish refinement and reliability beneath. I particularly find myself in my element playing the sequence from the Sanctus onwards towards the Osanna and finally into the stunning Dona Nobis Pacem.

Thank you @solomonsknot for that wonderful B Minor Mass just now @stgeorgesbris Such a serious endeavour, so joyously delivered. Customarily scorebound Bach reborn as liberated, off-the-book chamber music, and thoroughly deserving of that standing ovation.— Meurig Bowen (@MeurigB) May 23, 2018
