Bach - Unser Mund sei voll Lachens - Monteverdi Choir & English Baroque Soloists - La Scala, Milan

La Scala, Milan | Alte Oper, Frankfurt | Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg | St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London

I played first trumpet, and a solo trumpet aria, in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Unser Mund sei voll Lachens [BWV 110] at La Scala in Milan on Monday 2 December 2024.

The performance, given by the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists under the direction of Christophe Rousset, took place in front of a sold-out La Scala audience. The concert also featured music by Charpentier, and the entire performance will be reprised over the coming weeks at Frankfurt’s Alte Oper, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and London’s St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

It was a great pleasure to play at this iconic venue, and a thrill to play the trumpet aria, Wacht auf, ihr Adern und ihr Glieder, with the bass soloist Florian Störtz.

I enjoyed visiting Milan, which was beginning to look quite festive. It was the first time I have ever visited this fashionable and photogenic city, and hopefully not my last. In fact, I will be retuning to Teatro La Scala in May 2025 with Christophe Rousset’s own orchestra, Les Talens Lyriques.
