Handel - Messiah - Forest School

I played first (vented) trumpet at A=440 Hz in a performance of Handel's Messiah at Forest School in Walthamstow (London) on Saturday 11th March 2023. A good colleague and friend, Dave Clewlow (who also teaches at the school) played second trumpet and Keith Price played timpani. Students from the secondary and prep school joined forces with a community choir to sing this well-known oratorio by Handel.

The soloists were predominantly students and staff at the school; all did an excellent job. Since the performance was student-focused, the general feeling was that it would be unnecessary to perform the D.S. in 'The Trumpet Shall Sound', but it would be nice to hear the B section. Therefore, we decided to do an unusual Dal Segno, with the bass soloist singing one final iterance of 'The Trumpet Shall Sound' before the musicians cut to the play-out. It worked well, and it was fitting in the circumstances. We are indebted to the double bassist (who runs his own orchestra and therefore thinks like an orchestral manager), who had the foresight to mark this in the bassoonist's part; the bassoonist was a last-minute replacement player who played only in the concert.

Earlier in the day, I took the opportunity to visit my former flatmate, who lives nearby, and I bought my second Brompton (folding bicycle).

The performance took place in the school's sports hall, which had been set up by a professional lighting crew. We also had chance to look in the historic main hall of the school, which was apparently a contender for being used as the 'Great Hall' in the Harry Potter films.
